The Chronicle Recommends: dry rosé | June 2, 12:14 pm | 0 comments

"The pink conundrum continues. Rosé is as popular as ever, the case having finally been made for its summery charms. And yet the quality gap keeps growing. It's almost axiomatic: The more people drink rosé, the more mediocre rosé appears." Source: sfgate.com

2010 Wine Blog Awards Voting is Open | June 5, 8:38 am | 0 comments

"Public voting for the 2010 Wine Blog Awards is now open. Our panel of 11 judges spent a full month reviewing dozens of blogs for each of the eight award categories and has narrowed down the list to five finalists per category. The public voting period will run for one week from May 24 – 30. The final winners of each category will be determined via a 50/50 weighting of the public vote and that of the judges and will be announced on June 25, 2010 at the North American Wine Bloggers Conference." “Quickly emptied:” Rating wine on a drinkability scale | June 10, 9:36 am | 0 comments

"After surveying several dozen choices last night in my basement last night–too cool an evening for a rosé, never enough Pinot around–I settled on the 2008 D. Coquelet, “vieilles vignes” from the often-overlooked appellation of Chiroubles. Still in his twenties, Damien Coquelet is both the stepson of Georges Descombes, the Morgon vigneron, and a rising star of Beaujolais." Source: drvino.com

A World Cup Drinking Challenge | June 11, 1:02 pm | 0 comments

"It all started as an excuse to drink good wine during the 1998 World Cup in France. A few of us had decided to attend the tournament, but before we jumped in the car we had to work out where we were going to watch those matches for which we didn't have tickets. France doesn't have many pubs, and for my Anglo-Saxon friends the thought of watching their beloved England team in a Parisian café didn't appeal. And it was beer they were after, in this wine-drinking country; warm and flat, not the strong, gassy lager served on the Continent. " Source: wsj.com

A superstar couple carves their own path | June 16, 6:31 pm | 0 comments

"It's hard to imagine a more formidable wine duo than Andy Erickson and Annie Favia. As a winemaker, Andy has skimmed the absolute top of Napa's cream: Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Ovid, Dancing Hares and Arietta. Annie cut her teeth under John Kongsgaard and Cathy Corison before working out in the vineyards with David Abreu, viticulturist to the brightest stars in Napa's firmament (Harlan Estate, Bryant Family and several of Erickson's clients). Together they could probably create a 98-point wine in their sleep." Source: sfgate.com

Wine is good for you. Or is it? | June 21, 3:49 pm | 0 comments

"After 15 years or more of reading about "The French Paradox," I think most wine enthusiasts have become happily blasé about the hypothesis that wine in general - and red wine in particular - can be heart-healthy even among people like the French who, we're inclined to believe, regularly consume a diet of rich sauces made with butter and cream. Study after study cascades down on us, trumpeting the health benefits of wine's antioxidants, free radicals and resveratrol, oh my!" Source: wineloverspage.com

The Chronicle Recommends: Lodi Zinfandel | June 23, 8:59 pm | 0 comments

"When California Zinfandel comes up in conversation, the mention of Lodi often follows. The Lodi appellation lies between the Sierra foothills and the San Francisco Bay and is home to more than 5 dozen wineries, 75 percent of which make Zinfandel." Source: sfgate.com

2009 Beaujolais impressive | June 28, 2:35 pm | 0 comments

"If you've been underwhelmed by Beaujolais, get ready: You're in for a happy surprise when the 2009 "Crus" hit the market this summer. "For me 2009 is the vintage of the sun - in fact, this is the best vintage of my lifetime," exults Georges Duboeuf, the so-called King of Beaujolais, whose multiple labels seem to dominate most wine shops' Beaujolais sections." Most Logged Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon

From the Wine Guide

Trebbiano: Because it is so easy to grow and makes more wine per grape than most grapes do, this white wine grape can and does produce more bottles of wine than any other grape! By itself, the wines will be fairly bland and lack body. However, these characteristics make it good for blending, especially with overly-rich grapes and brandy. It is also called Ugni-Blanc and Saint Emilion.
