Syrah, or Shiraz

Red Wine Grape

The most popular red wine grape in Australia, where it makes a sweet, flavorful wine, it is also common in the French Rhone Valley, where it creates a spicy wine, and California. Usually best when drank fairly young, within a year of production.

Half-price close out at Food Lion. Not syrupy, as I find some syrahs. Not complex, either, but the best $3 wine I've had in some time. Not even bad at $6.50

Koyle Vineyards 2007 Syrah/Shiraz
Chile, Colchagua Valley
A-
This first vintage of Koyle Syrah presents a dark violet color, rich and generous, with creamy, intense cassis and graphite notes, chocolate and toasty oak on the nose and palate. Ripe tannins are well integrated; the structure and intense flavors suggest great aging potential. It has a long, lingering, velvety finish. This wine can be cellared for up to five years.     Intense notes of mocha and smoke on the nose are mixed with the sweetness of ripe black fruit showing through on the palate with a prevalence of plums, blueberries and black currants. Pairs well with red meat and hearty pasta dishes.

This wine lays on the palate without leaving much of an impression. Oddly though it comes on strong at the finish with a bit of a bite.
